Winter Solstice

Winter Solstice is the longest night of the year, since on this day the earth tilts farthest away from the sun and we actually have less than 12 hours of daylight. December 21st (Winter Solstice) is the start of the solar new year and from this day on daylight hours gradually increase, providing slow relief from the dark dreariness of winter.

Solstice is one of the longest celebrated winter holidays as it provides us a time to sit in the darkness of contemplation to review the year that has past, gathering the lessons we wish to retain and releasing that which no longer serves us. The return of the light is symbolic of hope for the days ahead and the chance to begin anew and plant the seeds of mindful intention.

Honor this ancient practice by taking some time this weekend to sit in the quiet darkness of your own mind ponder the progress you have made in the last year and what you foresee for yourself in 2015.
