Summer Solstice: A Celebration of the light within and around us

Sunday June 21st marks the Summer Solstice, a day that has long been revered as a powerful time to reflect on the first half of the year and set intentions for the coming months. The word solstice is derived of 2 latin words meaning sun and to stand still, and describes what happens astrologically on the day. On June 21st, the sun reaches the highest point on it’s path and appears to come to a complete stop, marking the longest day of the year and the point of the year when days start to get shorter and nights lengthen.

Worshipped and appreciated as a giver of light and life on our planet, the sun is an essential part of our existence. Because of this, cultures and disciplines across the planet have tuned into its rhythm and cycles since the beginning of time. The Yoga practice is very much included in this group as it  honors the sun and its place in our lives with Sun Salutations, a series of movements that were practiced daily to bow in reverence and gratitude for this ball of fire and life.

Symbolically, the summer solstice honors the light of our consciousness and awareness. On this day, we are encouraged us to pause and acknowledge the light of our own awareness, our power as conscious creators of our world and our eternal capacity for love. Just as our garden begins to grow at this time of year, solstice is a potent time for us to plant the seeds of our dreams and desires and watch as they come into fruition.

Honor this ancient practice this weekend by taking some time to reflect on the first half of 2015; the lessons it has brought you and the progress you have made. This information can then be used to develop an plan for living in a way that is fully aligned with your highest self and the bright light of your awareness and heart. Happy Summer Solstice!!
